The power of swimming on National Fitness Day

When we think about the pathway many of us take into fitness, it starts with swimming lessons. A formative experience of exercise, swimming lessons can create the narrative a child feels around fitness for many years to come.

National Fitness Day is an annual celebration led by UK Active to get people talking about fitness and this year’s theme is Powered by You, which aims to get everyone thinking about the individual role they play in making fitness accessible for both themselves and others.

As parents, we’re responsible for introducing our children to exercise in a way that makes them feel positive and empowered by the experience… and that’s where we come in.

At Swim Academy, we’re passionate that swimming lessons can provide the foundations for a healthy and fulfilling relationship with fitness from day one – but how do we do that?

We give children the power to learn a range of lifelong skills from their first time in the pool. It’s more than just swimming, these are experiences that will shape them in so many ways.

Power… to develop a life-saving skill

The fact that swimming lessons deliver a life-saving skill to children from as young as 4 is something we shouldn’t overlook.

The ability to swim puts a huge power in children’s hands and one that they could come to rely on heavily at any stage of life.

Power… to learn to love the water.

As well as safety, we are teaching children to love the water. Our Baby Swim lessons are a bonding experience that are founded on play and exploration, designed to help children enjoy the water from the very beginning.

As well as being a life-saving skill, swimming is a great form of exercise and can be a really enjoyable experience if you feel at ease in the water, so our aim is to give children that power from day one.

Power… to experience commitment and routine

Where school is a non-negotiable form of commitment and routine, swimming lessons can often be viewed as optional. When children find themselves feeling tired, not in the mood or presented with a ‘better’ option, it’s easy to put swimming lessons on hold.

However, these lessons provide an invaluable opportunity to teach commitment and routine from a young age. By providing your child with a consistent lesson every week that they look forward to attending, a time where they learn something new and progress their skills, you’re showing them how commitment drives achievement and a sense of empowerment.

Power… to explore a passion for fitness

With our Baby Swim lessons starting from birth, this really can be your child’s first experience of fitness, as well as something they can stick with up to the age of 11 through our program and then beyond.

As children progress through the stages, learning new skills and growing confidence, you can already envision how their passion for not just swimming but moving their body in general will develop.

Power… to make new friends

Learning to swim is an amazing skill but potentially even better than that, an opportunity to make new friends.

Swimming lessons provide children with the chance to connect with new people outside of their usual community, allowing them to discover new cultures and personalities they may not usually be exposed to.

By attending consistently, they can grow these friendships in and out of the pool.

The power of swim to children is invaluable and the opportunities it presents children are all as important as each other.
